Who Is Betty Boop?
The story of Betty Boop starts in 1930 on 9th of August when she first made her appearance in the Fleischer’s Talkartoon series. Modeled on the pattern given by Clara Bow and having the same sweet Brooklyn accent as Helen Kane, Betty Boop debuted in Dizzy Dishes. Her appearance was a hit and in 1932 the little sexy girl was given a series of her own in which she could display all her talents. Betty sang and danced and exhibited provocative clothes that kept men in front of the television when the she was on.
The debut of Betty Boop cartoons marked the beginnings of a new type of cartoon: the ones addressed to the adult public, who will get away from quotidian worries and will plunge in a world of fantasy mixed with the purest realty. To match this new type of cartoons, Paramount had to design a character which will create the illusion of reality, but at the same time will work great in any surreal situation.
So, they created Betty Boop, the perfect flapper girl and at the same time an innocent figure with lots of heart. It was impossible not to love Betty! She was the perfect combination between purity and sex symbol, the type of girl you will want to take home to be your little sister, your friend and your lover.
People instantly fell for Betty and until 1934 (when Betty’s image was tamed), she remained the perfect illustration of the sexualized female cartoon character. Unlike other female cartoon characters, which were mere imitations of their male counterparts, Betty represented the woman with sexy looks, determination and a touch of superficiality whenever things went wrong. Even after 1934, when the sexual tone was prohibited and Betty turned into a docile woman, she still retained something of that specific flavor of hers which made people love her.
